More Than a Pregnancy Pillow: 4 Ways to Use the Obasan Pregnancy Pillow

More Than a Pregnancy Pillow: 4 Ways to Use the Obasan Pregnancy Pillow

A pregnancy pillow might sound like its use is limited to the life stage it’s named after before being quietly tucked away once your baby arrives. But when a pregnancy pillow is thoughtfully designed around the way your body moves and changes, its usefulness doesn’t have to end with pregnancy.

The Obasan Organic Latex Pregnancy Pillow was designed to support the body through pregnancy, postpartum recovery, nursing and beyond. Its two detachable crescent-shaped pillows can be used together for full-body support or separately when you need more targeted support.

That means one pillow can take on many roles: supporting your belly while you sleep, helping you get comfortable during postpartum recovery, providing support while nursing, or simply becoming the body pillow you reach for every night.

Here's what makes the Obasan Pregnancy Pillow different and five ways you can use it.

What Makes the Obasan Pregnancy Pillow Different?

Before getting into all the ways you can use it, it helps to understand why the pillow was designed differently in the first place.

Perinatal-informed design

Pregnancy changes the way your body moves, rests and sleeps. As your belly grows, your centre of gravity shifts, and your hips, pelvis, lower back and legs can all experience new pressure.

The Obasan Pregnancy Pillow was designed in collaboration with Shauna Ironside, an Osteopathic Manual Therapist specializing in perinatal and paediatric care, as well as a Certified Athletic Therapist and Certified Breastfeeding Specialist. In short, she’s incredibly educated and mindful about the body.

With more than 20 years of experience working with people of different ages, bodies and physical abilities, Shauna brings a practical understanding of how the body moves, adapts and heals.

Her approach to perinatal care recognizes that there isn't one universal formula for supporting a changing body. Pregnancy, birth and motherhood can be physically demanding, and the right support needs to adapt to the individual.

That thinking shaped the Obasan Pregnancy Pillow. Its full-body design supports the belly, pelvis, hips and legs while encouraging a comfortable side-sleeping position.

Dual-Detachable Design

Two crescent-shaped pillows, connected by a zippered organic cotton band, work together to create full-body support.

For more targeted support, you can simply unzip the panel that connects the two pillows. One crescent can support your back while another supports your legs, or they can be used independently for nursing, sitting, resting and more.

This makes the pillow adaptable to different stages of life and even different moments throughout the same day.

A Next-Generation Organic Latex Core

The 2026 edition of the Obasan Pregnancy Pillow features a next-generation solid moulded organic latex core, replacing the previous all-wool fill after extensive testing.

Unlike loose-fill materials that can shift or settle, the moulded latex core is designed to maintain its shape and provide consistent support night after night. Its natural elasticity also makes each crescent easier to reposition as you move.

The latex is GOLS-certified organic and made from latex harvested from rubber trees in Sri Lanka.

Naturally Breathable Materials

Comfort isn't only about support. It's also about how a pillow feels after hours in bed.

The pillow's open-cell organic latex allows continuous airflow and helps regulate moisture, while the removable cover is made from breathable organic cotton.

Together, these natural materials create a supportive pillow without synthetic foams or chemical treatments, so you can rest easy knowing you have a piece of nature for you and/or your baby to rest on.

Pregnancy: Support Better Side Sleeping

As pregnancy progresses, finding a comfortable sleeping position can become increasingly difficult. A growing belly can make your usual position feel unfamiliar, while your hips, pelvis and lower back may need more support.

Healthcare professionals commonly recommend side sleeping during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters. Research suggests that you can relieve pregnancy-related-pressure by placing pillows between the legs, under the baby bump, and behind the back. [1]

The Obasan Pregnancy Pillow brings several of these support points together in one design.

With both crescents connected, the pillow creates a supportive cocoon around the body. One side can support the belly while the lower portion supports the hips and legs, helping create a more stable side-sleeping position.

This matters because support isn't necessarily about forcing your body into one rigid position. It's about making a position more comfortable and sustainable throughout the night.

The Obasan Pregnancy Pillow can provide support around:

  • The belly, as your bump grows

  • The hips and pelvis, where pregnancy can create new pressure and discomfort

  • The legs and knees, helping cushion the lower body

  • The back, when additional support is needed

Because the latex core retains its shape, the support is designed to remain consistent rather than compressing or shifting beneath you.

A note on sleep position: Pregnancy guidance can vary based on your individual case. Please check with your healthcare provider about the sleep position that’s right for you.

Postpartum: Support Your Changing Body

Giving birth doesn't mean your body immediately returns to the way it felt before pregnancy.

In the postpartum period, you may still be navigating changes in your hips, pelvis, core, back and sleeping habits, all while adjusting to your new routine with an extra family member.

This is where a pillow designed to evolve with you becomes especially useful.

Once the two crescents are separated, you can use one behind your back to help you sit, place another between your legs for side sleeping, or arrange them wherever you need relief from pressure.

The pillow can also become part of your recovery routine during quiet moments: sitting in bed, reading, resting or simply finding a comfortable position after a long day.

Rather than becoming another pregnancy purchase that gets packed away after birth, the Obasan Pregnancy Pillow can continue to serve a purpose as your body and routines change.

Nursing: Support During Feeding

Nursing can mean spending a surprising amount of time in one position.

Whether you're feeding in bed, on the couch or in a favourite chair, supporting your own body can be just as important as finding a comfortable position for your baby.

The Obasan Pregnancy Pillow's detachable design gives you more flexibility.

Use one crescent as back support while nursing and the other to help create a comfortable surface for your baby. Because the two pillow pieces are independent, you can adjust their placement depending on your body, feeding position and surroundings.

The goal isn't to prescribe one “correct” nursing position. It's simply to give you another tool for supporting yourself while you and your baby find what works for you.

And when you're finished feeding, the pillow doesn't have to stay in the nursery. It can go right back to supporting you in bed, on the couch or wherever you happen to be resting.

Beyond Motherhood: Your Body Pillow

This part is easy to overlook: you don’t have to be pregnant to want a really good body pillow.

Side sleepers often use pillows between their knees or legs to add support and reduce tension on their hips. For people experiencing lower back discomfort, sleep position and individual comfort can be closely connected, and research suggests that there isn't one universally comfortable position for everyone.

That's why a supportive, adaptable pillow can be useful well beyond pregnancy.

Use one crescent:

  • Between your knees or legs

  • Behind your back

  • Under your legs

  • Along your body while side sleeping

  • While reading or resting in bed

  • As additional support while lounging

The full pillow can also create a physical boundary around your body. For some people, that can make rolling onto the stomach less natural and make side sleeping feel more comfortable.

Stomach sleeping can place the neck in a rotated position because the head needs to turn to one side to breathe, and may also affect spinal positioning. [2]

If you're trying to transition away from stomach sleeping, a body pillow can be one simple tool to experiment with because it gives you something to lean into while you get used to sleeping on your side.

Of course, your most comfortable sleep position is personal. If you're experiencing persistent pain or discomfort, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.

One Pillow. Many Stages.

The best products don't become obsolete when your circumstances change.

The Obasan Pregnancy Pillow was designed to do the opposite.

During pregnancy, it can support your belly, hips, pelvis and legs while helping make side sleeping more comfortable.

After birth, the two crescents can be separated and used for recovery, resting and back support.

During nursing, they can provide flexible support for your body and help with baby positioning.

And long after pregnancy and nursing, the pillow can continue as a body pillow, back support or simply a comfortable part of your sleep routine.

All of this is made possible by the details built into the design: a dual-detachable construction, a shape-retaining organic latex core, breathable organic cotton and a thoughtful approach developed with perinatal expertise.

And because it's handcrafted in Canada by skilled craftspeople in our carbon-neutral workshop in Ottawa, it's designed to be a lasting part of your home, not a temporary solution for one stage of life.
