Better Sleep, Made With Better Practices
At Obasan, sustainability isn’t a once-a-year conversation. It’s part of how we design, source, manufacture, and ship every product we make.
We believe sustainable manufacturing starts with everyday decisions: choosing lower-impact materials, reducing waste before it exists, designing products for longevity, and continuously improving the systems behind them.
From our carbon-neutral facility in Ottawa to our use of certified organic materials and modular product design, every initiative is part of a larger commitment to creating healthier sleep products with a lower environmental impact.
Crafted with care. Rooted in nature.
At Obasan, we believe a better night’s sleep and a healthier planet should go hand in hand.
In partnership with Cool Climate Club and Canada’s Forest Trust Corporation (CFTC), we’re planting trees across Canada and locally in Ottawa through the Let’s get growing! campaign to help grow Ottawa’s urban tree canopy and support biodiversity.
You can also choose to donate to plant a tree as part of our national reforestation efforts. Explore our Smart Forest™ Impact Site and track the measurable impact we’re creating together.
A Certified Carbon-Neutral Facility
Obasan proudly operates as a certified carbon-neutral facility through Carbonzero.
Our process begins with measuring emissions across our operations. From there, we work to reduce our footprint through responsible material sourcing, improved production efficiency, and lower-impact manufacturing practices. Remaining emissions are balanced through investments in environmental projects, including the Niagara Escarpment Forest Carbon Project, which helps protect native ecosystems and biodiversity within the region.
Our facility is re-evaluated annually to ensure our sustainability practices continue to meet carbon-neutral standards.
For us, environmental responsibility is an ongoing commitment to improving how our products are made while preserving the comfort, craftsmanship, and quality people expect from Obasan.
Better Materials for Healthier Sleep
Every Obasan mattress and bedding accessory is designed using carefully selected organic materials that prioritize both comfort and environmental responsibility. Unlike conventional polyurethane foams and synthetic materials commonly used in traditional mattresses, these materials are selected for durability, breathability, and zero chemical exposure.

Thoughtful Systems, Less Waste
At Obasan, waste reduction begins during the manufacturing process. Instead of discarding leftover materials, production offcuts like wool and latex are carefully collected and repurposed into fillings for pillows and other products whenever possible.
This approach helps extend the life cycle of valuable raw organic materials while reducing unnecessary waste in our Ottawa workshop.
Our paper packaging initiative is designed to reduce reliance on conventional plastic packaging while still protecting products during shipping.
Sustainability is an evolving process, and our packaging systems continue to be refined as better solutions become available. Any plastic received through manufacturing operations is collected, compressed, and sent to recycling partners for repurposing.
Smarter Shipping Methods
Mattresses are naturally large products, making transportation a significant contributor to environmental impact. Fewer mattresses per truckload means more trips, which require more fuel, which puts a strain on resources and the environment. To reduce shipping emissions and improve efficiency:
Mattress layers are rolled & compressed
Products are packaged more efficiently
More items can fit within each shipment
This helps reduce fuel usage, transportation frequency, and overall shipping impact.
Addressing Mattress Waste in Canada
Millions of mattresses are discarded every year, and many end up in landfills where synthetic materials can persist for decades. Traditional mattresses often contain polyurethane foams and synthetic textiles that are difficult to recycle and slow to break down.
Obasan approaches mattress design differently by prioritizing the use of organic materials that can break down naturally once exposed to the elements. Through partnerships with organizations like Matt Canada, used mattresses from select regions can be diverted away from landfills and processed for material recovery whenever possible.
A Mattress Designed to Last
One of the most sustainable choices we make at Obasan is creating products that don’t need to be replaced as frequently as many of our competitors. By designing our mattresses to be modular, we’re ensuring that you can easily replace individual mattress components instead of the entire mattress. This also means that if your sleep needs evolve, your mattress can evolve with you to ensure you’re still getting the best support night after night.
